Dr Fiona Kerr is on a mission to change the way we think about how we think.
She divides her time between the University of Adelaide, where she’s a Systems and Neural Complexity Specialist, and her own consultancy, public speaking and science communication. Fiona tackles complex and seemingly insurmountable problems with a combination of social cognitive neuroscience and complex systems dynamics. She’s a powerful advocate for the transformative qualities of human interaction, collaborating with public and private sector leaders to build flourishing organisations, as well as examining the effects of human touch and eye contact on human health and well-being.
The way we interact with each other and with our increasingly pervasive technology has profound implications for human relationships, organisations and societies, and Fiona collaborates with biomedical engineer Dr Jordan Nguyen, investigating the neurophysiological effects of interaction between humans and multiple types of technology.
Originally a student of anthropology and psychology, Fiona began her career in industrial relations management at the Electricity Trust of South Australia and then at Holden, before becoming a strategist. She returned to university 30 years after graduation to earn her doctorate in the field of complexity theory, before developing an interest in the neuroscience of leadership.
She consults widely on leadership with corporations and governments, showing how our leaders can change our brains and how understanding how this happens allows us to create adaptive organisational structures that maximise the effects of face-to-face contact and interaction with and through technology.
From the cascade of brain activity triggered by human eye contact to the existential threats and potential benefits of artificial intelligence, big data and the ubiquitous adoption of technology, Fiona has a knack of communicating complex and life-changing ideas. Her appearance at TEDx Adelaide: Metamorphosis won’t just change your mind: it will change your brain.
