TEDxAdelaide is on Thursday 20th October from 2pm in the Adelaide Town Hall and is themed Metamorphosis.
This reflects how we feel Adelaide is evolving. We know that Adelaide is a very special city and one that is sometimes called a ‘hidden gem’. The desire with TEDxAdelaide is to showcase ideas from Adelaide worth spreading, with everyone featured on stage being someone who calls Adelaide home.
Our speakers come from all walks of life: young, old and the in-between-ers, some born here, some having migrated here in search of a better quality of life. All have one more thing in common: they have a world class idea that they will be spreading later this month.
The curation process this year was very extensive. We started thinking about the topics that will continue to help Adelaide in it’s metamorphosis, something which we feel is well underway. We were very blessed to receive nearly 200 different ideas through our ‘open call’, a response which is very humbling and exciting about the depth of knowledge we have in our city.
Ideas are very precious: they direct the future (whilst stories provide lessons from the past). Ideas by their very nature are the cornerstone of innovation. They can provide the inspiration to consider new ways of doing things and it doesn’t really matter where they come from – what does matter is that they move from idea to concept to reality.
One of the differences between a TED or TEDx event and jumping on to TED.com to watch a video is the ‘selection’ is done for you. This might seem counterintuitive in an age where we can search for practically anything that interests you and get immediate results. One of the challenges with this is that we generally make selections on what interests us through our natural bias. We’ve carefully curated TEDxAdelaide: Metamorphosis to engage our audience with new possibilities and to broaden all of our outlooks.
What you may not know is that TEDxAdelaide is a not-for-profit event and volunteer run for the local community. Our team has a grown considerably since last year with experts in their field helping to make TEDxAdelaide happen.
We’ve tried to keep the price as low as possible; in fact to the best of our knowledge, we are the only TEDx state capital event with a ticket price below $100. We work hard to do this to make it accessible for as many people as possible. Running a TEDx event has some significant costs, including professional Audio-Visual services, so we have a permanent record of the ideas from our stage.
Based on feedback from last year we’ve moved our event to a Thursday afternoon and into the evening. There will be two sessions separated by a break to allow attendees to meet new people and discuss the ideas from the stage. We’ll also be serving some wonderful food creations which echo our metamorphosis theme.
So, if you enjoy a good TED talk, want to connect to a community that understands the power of an idea and cares about Adelaide then we’d love to see on the afternoon of the 20th!
