The cities we live in are changing, and Dr Charlie Hargroves and his teams are directing traffic at the intersection between industry, research and government to ensure that the solutions we choose to grow our cities produce a low carbon and sustainable future.
Charlie is an award-winning researcher, a full member of the Club of Rome, an expert advisor to the United Nations Centre for Regional Development, and a member of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Buildings and Construction Taskgroup on Infrastructure.
He graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2000, and spending two years as a practicing civil/structural design engineer. In 2002, Charlie co-founded The Natural Edge Project, an internationally recognised team of action research academics based at various universities across Australia. On invitation from Hunter Lovins (Time Magazine’s Millennium edition “Hero of the Planet”), Charlie spent 12 months on secondment in Boulder, Colorado, as the CEO of Natural Capitalism Solutions. He earned his PhD in Carbon Structural Adjustment and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute, working with Professor Peter Newman, and is the Sustainable Development Fellow at the University of Adelaide.
Working with various teams, Charlie has co-authored five international best-selling books, developed 2 comprehensive online education programs, 16 book chapters, 11 peer reviewed journal papers, and 27 conference papers. The first book won the Australian Banksia Award for Environmental Leadership, Education and Training in 2005, and the two most recent books were ranked among the ‘Top 40 Sustainability Books’ in the world in 2010 by the Cambridge Sustainability Leaders Program (Cents and Sustainability ranked 5th and Factor 5 ranked 12th).
He is a passionate speaker who articulates beautifully some of the most complicated challenges facing our world. He believes that we have turned a corner when it comes to our relationship with fossil fuels and that a transition to a low carbon economy is well under way.
