People can change the world.
That’s what we learned from the collective of nearly 200 ideas, in just over one month, from speaker submissions for TEDxAdelaide 2016: Metamorphosis.
Earlier this year we put a call-out to you, our community for ‘ideas worth spreading’, and were humbled to receive nearly 200 responses. We put all of those responses into a word-cloud software, and to our delight, the above graphic was generated.
This word cloud is a ‘data visualisation’, an image composed from nearly 200 individual paragraphs, whereby the more times a word is repeated, the bigger it becomes. Read more about word clouds on Wikipedia.
This word cloud is an example of data at its most beautiful. There are real people and strong passions behind this data. All of the words that form this word cloud mean more together than they do individually. This is an emergent phenomenon; the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts. Just like a butterfly that emerges transformed from the mushy cells of a caterpillar within the goo of a cocoon, individual thoughts and ideas are transformed into powerful representation of the wants and desires of a whole community. There’s power in that.
Our hope that is by seeing this, and what you’ve contributed to, will highlight how connected we all are, and how this community is connected by such similar values. We hope that it will encourage you to reach out into this community, to find each other, and to come up with creative ways to collaborate, cross pollinate and bring your ideas into emergent reality.
The conference we have curated for the 20th of October is one part of the story, one speck of a cell in the goo of the cocoon.
This word cloud is your collective answer to the question, “what is your idea worth spreading?” TED and TEDx is about ideas. Communities are about connection. Together, we can create action.
TEDxAdelaide 2016:Metamorphosis is imminent, so I’d ask now – what can we acheive when we throw all of our ideas into the melting pot? What will you create? What will you grow? How are you going to change the lives of others? How are you participating in “people can change the world”?
